Dr. Maria Montessori & the Montessori Method
Introduction to
Dr. Maria Montessori
Dr. Maria Montessori (1870 – 1952) was an Italian physician, educator, philosopher, and humanitarian. As the originator of the Montessori Method of Education, she revolutionized early childhood education by emphasizing self-directed learning, hands-on experiences, and a nurturing environment.
The Origins
The Montessori Method
Dr. Maria Montessori was the first woman in Italy to earn a medical degree. While working at a clinic in Rome with children facing physical and emotional challenges, she observed how meaningful, hands-on engagement with specially designed materials could transform the learning process. This insight inspired her to create a series of educational tools that redefined how all children acquire foundational skills they will carry for a lifetime.
In 1907, Dr. Montessori opened her first school, ‘Casa dei Bambini’, where children flourished in a carefully prepared environment. Educators from around the world came to witness the impact of her method. They noted not only the effectiveness of her materials but also the emphasis on self-directed learning and the importance of tailoring the environment to each child’s stage of development.
Recognizing the need to train educators, Dr. Montessori devoted her life to teaching others how to implement her approach. She traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, sharing her philosophy and techniques. Today, the Montessori Method continues to shape both public and private education around the globe, fostering independence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.
“Our aim is not only to make the child understand, and still less to force him to memorize, but so to touch his imagination as to enthuse him to his innermost core.”
